TERF ideology was a huge part of this online discourse, and what constitutes a TERF. Trans women weren’t even in the room when this conversation happened and they’re getting the brunt of it. Drew since addressed this via her TikTok.

Because of that I decided to delve into what it means to be a TERF, the impacts they have on society. I also thought to myself ‘trans people are often left out of conversations about them’ so I gained perspectives from trans, cis, and non-binary people.

What is a TERF

I first heard the term TERF back in 2024 - I was so shocked that people like this even existed. Cause like come on how can you call yourself a feminist whilst also excluding trans people. That goes to show how sheltered I was from it, the privilege to not have them within my orbit.

According to the Cambridge dictionary - trans exclusionary radical feminists self-identify as feminist but are unwilling to include transgender women and girls in their advocacy. However, I thought ‘that’s not good enough’ so I asked trans, cis and non-binary people what TERF meant to them.

Societal Impacts

When I searched the literature I came across a study on trans people in Ireland - they found; stigma, deficiencies in mental health services, importance of peer support, and achieving self-acceptance and societal inclusion.

Which aligned with some of the perspectives given:

Bioessentialism

I’ve looked up the definition so you don’t have to ‘bioessentialism overstates the importance of genetics and biological processes in determining phenotypic and behavioral characteristics, and erroneously links human social norms to supposed underlying deterministic biological causes’.

That’s just a fancy way of saying, people who are obsessed with labelling sex and gender, and expecting people to behave in a certain way, based on their genitalia.

Societal Change

Much like the research recommendations for societal change; representation, education, and online activism were also suggested by the participants.

But really, can we get through to people who use the guise of ‘feminism’ to harm trans people.

Final thoughts

I learned so much from the trans community during this whole process; societal impacts; bioessentialism; need for societal change; and if we can/cannot change a TERFs mind.

As an intersectional feminist it’s clear to me that trans rights benefit everyone. Just by existing they are challenging the system. Yet they are one of the most marginalised groups in society. Which isn’t a shock when you think about it, if your very existence disrupts people who are happy with the hierarchy, with being on top of the wealth income class. Being in power of women’s bodies, then why would they allow a group of people to challenge it?

They wouldn’t.

If patriarchal norms oppress cisgender women - then why don’t TERFs embrace the trans community into their movement? After all just by existing the trans community are challenging these norms. Why is there a subset of cisgender women propping up the patriarchy and continuing on the oppression they are apparently fighting against?

The answer is - they aren’t feminists, that’s why. Because feminism is not feminism unless it’s intersectional.

Reading out his words

I was in a bit of trouble last week, I, a woman, dared to read out a man’s own words online. Who do I think I am? The absolute audacity, to target such a vulnerable population - famous white cis-men.

Let’s take it from the beginning. After Glen Hansard passed, I shared a memorial post suggesting we support the homeless community in honour of him. After all he was a standup guy he was an activist, he was a singer AND he won an Oscar.

Luckily I had followers who left comments and contacted me via direct message, they let me know to look into Glen Hansards past actions. That’s when I came across THE interview. The entertainment weekly interview from 2007. Where he openly admitted that he stayed in Markéta Irglova’s parents’ house and started developing a relationship with her from 12 years of age. They had talked in his room about his music. She joined him to play music on his shows when she was 13, 14. Glen said that himself and Markéta were in love two years prior to the interview, making her 17 and him 35 when they fell in love. He also said that even back then, he knew she would be the girl he would marry one day.

People who had reached out to me recognised their own personal experiences and a pattern of grooming within this situation. I want to emphasise at this point it was victims of grooming and abuse that reached out to me, not victims of Glen Hansard. And that Markéta has never said publicly that she was groomed or abused by Glen Hansard and continued to have a relationship with him up until his passing.

‘Many survivors find it very hard to name what happened, sometimes for decades. They may have felt loved. They may have complied, gone back, or felt they chose or even pursued what happened. Grooming works by making a person feel they have chosen a path, when in fact they were manipulated into it.

The person who did this to them rarely resembles the typical idea of an abuser. Recognition can arrive years later, prompted by a news story, a new relationship, or having children of their own.’

I decided to create a post acknowledging the survivors who reached out to me, people who were feeling distressed by seeing him praised online. I acknowledged them and I read out Glen Hansards own words from the interview, whilst explaining the timeline.

That’s when the shit hit the fan.

The Response

For the most part people were supportive. But I had a number of people who were harassing me, leaving hateful comments and sending me aggressive DMs. A lot of those people were working over time, doing mental gymnastics to excuse the words Glen Hansard said from his own mouth. I blocked one man and he contacted someone I knew to harass them, because he couldn’t get to me. My life was threatened and I was threatened with defamation countless times. I had created a post warning people that I was screenshotting their comments and because of that I was further harassed and called a bully. God forbid a woman defends herself and holds you accountable. That’s nearly worse than reading a man’s words out online.

I think the most shocking thing was the response from the left. Activists harassing me. As a leftist feminist I knew misogyny was rampant on the left, but I really felt the brunt of it over those few days.

I had hundreds of people contacting me majority of them were victims of abuse and grooming, telling me their stories. I heard from a number of people who had experiences with Glen Hansard. Some were witnesses, some were first hand victims. Some were underage at the time of the incidents. I felt privileged that they felt safe enough to confide in me and I could attempt to - at the very least - provide emotional support for them.

I wanted to share their stories here and many of them gave me permission. But a couple of journalists had reached out to me. Upon reflection I decided it would be safer if a reputable newspaper looked after them. I spent a couple of days talking with journalists. I looked up their credentials. Made sure the victims and witnesses anonymity would be safe. I double checked their process and what type of angle they were going for. I wasn’t going to just put their safety and mental health at risk for a dodgy journalist. After a long conversation, I agreed to pass on the journalist’s information to the victims and witnesses.

Reason for Backlash

Parasocial relationships

A parasocial relationship is when a person feels like they have a bond, a connection with a celebrity. In this case Glen Hansard. We seen it in the comment sections people leaving essay long comments about how Glen Hansard’s music changed their life, and although they never met him he was such a kind and gentle soul. People saying anything negative about their beloved Glen will burn in hell!

‘Parasocial relationships refer to one-sided relationships in which a person develops a strong sense of connection, intimacy, or familiarity with someone they don’t know, most often celebrities or media personalities. These relationships exist only in the mind of the individual, who experiences a bond despite the lack of reciprocity.’

Parasocial relationships ties in a bit with the next reason, cognitive dissonance.

Cognitive dissonance

I think the public fell into four camps;

1. They didn’t know what Glen Hansard had done and defended him when they found out

2. They had heard before and they were defending it now

3. They didn’t know but when they found out they called him out on it

4. They already knew and they had been calling it out for years

For groups 1 & 2 I believe they were experiencing cognitive dissonance

‘Cognitive dissonance is a term for the state of discomfort felt when two or more modes of thought contradict each other. The clashing cognitions may include ideas, beliefs, or the knowledge that one has behaved in a certain way.’

Glen Hansard is an Oscar winner, he’s a white Irish man, he’s an advocate and a leftist and seemingly an all round good guy. Then you mix in the parasocial relationship, where they feel they have a deep connection to Glen Hansard.

They’ll think “there is no way he could do that” and “even if he did it was taken out of context”

If they believed he was such a good person and they felt like they have a connection- but yet they were being told he was a predator - it would be cognitively uncomfortable. So instead of sitting in discomfort, they choose certainty over uncertainty. Black and white thinking. To protect their certainty, they choose to believe it’s false or that it wasn’t that bad. This then can translate to attacking anyone to who threatens their certainty.

Misogyny on the Left

I’m use to experiencing misogyny my whole life. I expect it within systems, from boys, men and oppressed women. But I was not expecting it to be this bad from the left. My own community. And come on I’m aware misogyny is ingrained into our lives systemically. And the left is not exempt. But a part of me was still shocked.

I had a follower let me know they’re called Brocialists, so shout out to them! They have a Palestine flag in their bio, they’re anti-establishment, anti-capitalist, anti-neoliberalist. They claim to support women, sure they’re on the left?

So when a woman speaks up about a predatory famous white Irish leftist cis-man, Brocialists are quick to call you insane. Tell you you’re a liar and stalk and harass you online.

Performative leftists I call them. Because if you’re not willing to support women and children. Or to critique one of your own, then that’s what it is, a performance.

Final thoughts

Even though I read out Glen Hansard’s own words I still got the brunt of it.

How dare I?

Burn her at the stake and if she tries to defend herself, burn everything to the ground.

Ok I’m being a bit dramatic, but the message is still true. If you’re a woman you’ll get in more trouble for reading out a famous white cis-man’s words than he will for what he said and did.

Throughout all of this I couldn’t help but feel the weight of women being gaslit, ridiculed and scapegoated. Survivors of abuse don’t speak up because there is so much hate and push back. They aren’t believed, they’re shamed, and their lives are put at risk.

This is for the survivors who don’t have a platform or feel safe enough to speak up.

This is for them.

How about it’s the parasocial relationship that’s protected him all this time? And is still protecting him.

I created a reel reading out Glen Hansard’s own words and I’ve been relentlessly harassed and my life has been threatened. Sounds like the parasocial relationship for a famous cis-white man is really working out for him. Shocker.

Even when he speaks of his negatives he has to spin it as a positive

‘Yet, over time, they began to feel strangely contrived….. What struck me wasn’t insincerity so much as a profound need to connect; an almost desperate desire to be understood, loved, perhaps even needed’

What kool-aid are people drinking that they’re calling this man’s behaviour “complicated” and “flaws”

‘Those memories deserve to be cherished, but perhaps the people who helped create them deserve something else as well. Not sainthood. Not excommunication. Just acknowledgement of their flaws, and the dignity of remaining complicated.’

It’s news articles like this that keep men like Glen Hansard and the men that come after him safe. It’s minimising the situation and places blame on society rather than on his actions.

It’s tale as old as time. Nothing changes unfortunately.

Trigger warning: forms of abuse will be mentioned within this article

I stood in the kitchen in my secondary school uniform, white adidas runners, gold rings on every finger and huge gold hooped earrings. Clenched in my hand was a stick soaked with pee, the pee stick of destiny one might call it. My sister had bought me a pregnancy test because I noticed my period was late (three months to be exact) but I didn’t tell her that extra detail. The look of shock in her face when I said, “it’s positive” she gasped “ma’s gonna to kill you”.

I was 16 and pregnant but fortunate enough to be born one generation late. If I was born in my mother’s generation, I would have ended up in a mother and baby home.

Institutions

When I found out I was pregnant I didn’t know mother and baby homes or the Magdalene laundries ever existed. That’s the thing about being Irish we’re great at story telling but somehow (cough cough Catholic Church) we’re professionals at shame and secrets.

From 1858 - 1998 the Catholic Church colluded with the Irish state to imprison women and children in institutions all across Ireland.

Reformatories and Industrial Schools

From 1858 - 1995 children who were allegedly orphaned, neglected or behaving badly were placed in industrial schools or reformatories. I say allegedly because many of the children’s status (orphaned, neglected, behaving badly) was decided by the Irish state and the church.

Some children began slave labour as early as of 5 years of age. Work was central to daily life in these institutions, their labour included:

Domestic chores, laundry, rosary bead and rug making, embroidery, knitting, weaving, shoe making, tailoring, carpentry, kitchens, staff residences, farmyards, fields, bogs, day labour for local farmers and businesses.

Domestic tasks; schools, kitchens, convents, local presbyteries, homes of local families, farms.

Children in these schools reported experiencing both sexual and physical abuse. Witnesses reported experiencing frequent and sometimes random acts of violence; sleeping outside overnight, being forced into cold or excessively hot baths, hosed down with cold water before being beaten, beaten while hanging from hooks on the wall, being set upon by dogs, being restrained in order to be beaten, physical assault by more than one person, and having objects thrown at them. They were also beaten with canes, sticks, hurleys, hammers, metal objects and ‘the leather’ multiple leather straps sewn together, some leather straps had metal added for extra weight.

Magdalene Laundries

From 1922 - 1996 women and girls were imprisoned in the Magdalene laundries due to a number of reasons; married out of wedlock, daughters of unmarried mothers, sexual abuse, promiscuousness, and previously detained in reformatory or industrial schools.

According to the Macaleese report there were 11,198 women and girls detained in the Magdalene laundries. But I want to point out that the report is based on incomplete and flawed data. This number does not represent all women and girls detained in the laundries.

Women and girls were forced to carry out slave labour, they primarily sewed and worked in laundries.

It was very hard work in the Laundry. The roof was all glass, the heat was unbelievable. You couldn’t leave your station unless a bell went. In the workroom I was trained to sew, we made fantastic stuff for the outside- kids clothes, first communion clothes, priests vestments ... there was a sale of work in November for 3 days and the public came in.

Women and girls were subjected to sexual, physical, emotional and verbal abuse. They were allowed to send letters to family or friends, but the letters going out and coming in were checked. If the letters going out didn’t suit, they weren’t posted.

Many women were detained for life. Some became institutionalised. So, even if they wanted to leave they couldn’t, they would struggle to live in the outside world.

Mother and Baby Homes

From 1922 - 1998 women and girls who were pregnant out of wedlock were detained in mother and baby homes.

January 2021 the Department of Children, Disability and Equality publish the ‘The Commission of Investigation into the Mother and Baby Homes’. I began to read the commissions report and the parts that I read, to be honest, had me fuming. Missing financial data, but yet they concluded:

‘the religious orders which ran the institutions…… they struggled to make ends meet particularly when occupancy rates declined’

I felt myself fill with anger ‘struggled to make ends meet’ ‘occupancy’ as if they weren’t forced into slave labour and their children weren’t being sold. As if the women and children who were detained by force where just living there freely.

The commission report stated that ‘there were about 56,000 unmarried mothers and about 57,000 children in the mother and baby homes and county homes investigated by the Commission’. Seeing as there is missing information and inaccuracies throughout this report I cannot safely say these numbers are correct.

A number of the women and girls detained in these institutions had been raped, which resulted in pregnancy. The word rape was mention just under 100 times in the commission report, and remember this report is missing an unknown amount of testimonies and data.

This woman was born in a workhouse. She then lived in industrial schools and a Magdalen laundry. She was raped by a priest. Her baby was born in Pelletstown in 1956 when she was aged 25 ~ Commissions report

Some institutions required women and girls to hand over their welfare payments to ‘contribute to the institution’s costs’. Slave labour consisted of cooking, heavy scrubbing and cleaning, needlework, laundry, packing commercial goods, care work, heavy groundskeeping, farming and cutting wood or turf.

One witness reported that in 1966, at St Patrick’s Navan Road ‘she was on top of a ladder fixing curtains and that she was forced to finish this chore before she would be transferred to St Kevin’s (maternity hospital) regardless of the fact she had gone into labour.’ Witnesses described being forced to work to the point of labour, often carrying out punitive tasks; one witness described being required to cut the lawn at Bessborough with scissors. Following the birth, mothers were forced to return to work almost immediately ~ Alternative executive summary

Children were often ‘adopted’ without consent. Adoptee parents would then provide ‘donations’. Sounds more like child trafficking to me.

A number of witnesses spoke about donations they believed were sent by their adoptive parents following on from their USA adoption.

Her parents, she said, had paid $1500 to adopt her, had verified they could ‘provide for her’ and gave assurances that she would be ‘raised as a Catholic’. She told the Committee that they had been required to continue paying ‘donations’ until she was 16 years old.

All notes. Money I had never seen before which looked like dollars. So, all in plastic bands. So, I counted it then and passed it to the Sister. She counted it and gave it back to me. I counted it. She finally counted it and then it was registered in the book… I mean but there was quite a lot of tins. ~ commission report

Bessborough

I’ll be honest I didn’t know about Bessborough until I attended a protest for Irish neutrality outside the Dáil, where I met Bessborough protestors.

I shook hands with Noelle Brown a member of Dublin City council, who was born in Bessborough. I spotted a woman pacing up and down. It was hard to miss her as she inspiringly commanded the space. She had on a long black hooded cloak, with a speaker blaring music as she chanted for the lost souls of Bessborough.

I took this photo and chatted with this woman but I never got her name - so if you happen to know her please do reach out to me.

From 1922 until 1998 Bessborough was a mother and baby home. Like all mother and baby homes, women who were sent there were forced into slave labour and some of their children were trafficked for ‘donations’ under the guise of ‘adoptions’.

According to the commission report roughly 9,768 mothers and 8,938 babies were admitted to Bessborough. They also stated that of 923 Bessborough infant deaths, burial records existed for only 64. But again data is missing and inaccurate, there are a number of activists who have worked on attaining accurate numbers. Daniel Loftus found that ‘891 of 923 names are known (we at projectinfant are still trying to locate the other 32) 858 children are unaccounted for in terms of burials’.

In 2020 the nuns sold a part of the Bessborough site to property developers for 6.8 million. They did this knowing there was a likelihood that children were buried on the institution’s grounds. It was stated that ‘part of the money from the sale will be dedicated to supporting our present and future retired sisters in Ireland’.

Early this year the developer Estuary View Enterprises received planning permission from cork city council to build apartments.

Families and activists are still fighting with the Irish government to ensure a proper search of the property is undertaken prior to any property development. If there are missing children, missing mothers and missing burial sites, its their duty to search the property to prevent desecration of unmarked graves.

Final thoughts

From 1858 - 1998 the Catholic Church disguised a coordinated system of institutions built on slave labour, abuse and child trafficking as a moralist issue being addressed by the Catholic church. They wielded their moral superiority to subdue and abuse Irish society, and took prisoner and profited from women and children.

I refused to shirk away from calling it what it is, slave labour and child trafficking. When we continue to use language that disguises the abhorrent actions of the Catholic church, we are continuing to protect and minmise the untold harm they have caused to many generations past and yet to come.

The Catholic church is still profiting off of the lives and the dignity of the women and children of Bessborrough, most recently 6.8 million to be exact.

We have a responsibility now to support the Bessborough families and activists. To no longer allow powerful entities to capitalise on the pain and suffering of the people of Ireland.

It not only reflects societal norms, but also perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards, misogyny, racism, heteronormativity and exclusionary practices.

_{Beauty Standards}

My body always was a point of conversation. Before I hit puberty I was “fat” in my late teens I was “skinny”. Now as a 40 year old woman (who is chronically unwell with Adenomyosis and fluctuating weight) local men at the bus stop will loudly announce “you’ve gained weight”.

I am soooo grateful, how would I survive without constant surveillance and criticism from old, beer bellied, bald, smelly men?

The thing is, the messaging tells us if you look a certain way, you will be safe and accepted. You are told that if you’re chosen by a man, it meant you were valuable.

But really, we’re just kept in line and controlled via this “beauty standard” decided by white rich men. A standard that gives permission for men to objectify, abuse and sexualise girls and women.

So how does this relate to love island?

The women on love island always seem to be a specific body type:

Certain weight and height

No cellulite

Whitened teeth

Dyed hair

Lip fillers

Perfect hair and makeup

Now don’t get me wrong, women have the right to do what they want with their bodies. I am all for freedom of expression, especially for women. This isn’t about that. It’s when this is portrayed as the norm. When it perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards, that’s when it’s harmful.

When we don’t see ourselves represented through the media it sends a message that we are not valuable, we shouldn’t be seen, and we are not the norm. This then impacts our relationship with our mind and body, and with the world around us.

_Misogyny

Misogyny is rife on love island. It’s like that pot of glitter you spilled back in 2012 getting ready for a Tiesto gig. It most certainly is not coming out of the carpet, and you’re still randomly finding bits of it in your hair.

But the funny thing about misogyny is that it’s not actually funny, it’s a behaviour and attitude deigned to oppress women and uphold the patriarchy. To keep men in place of dominance over women.

But I suppose when you think about it, it’s hilariously ironic how a system set up to keep men in positions of power, is harming them as well.

We see slut shaming both on the show and on social media, and when the women react, they are deemed overly emotional.

We witness misogyny when male contestants lie and gaslight their love interests, and when male bystanders don’t hold them accountable.

I would like to say the boys have been holding other male contestants accountable this season, but it only seemed to be when they felt “mugged off” by Finn. When he was being disingenuous to the boys about his intentions with Ellie and Elicia. So even then, it’s centred around their feelings.

Throughout the seasons I’ve noticed that internalised misogyny presents itself as:

Snide remarks and gossiping about other women in the house

Easily taking the man’s word for it – but doubting other female contestants

Minimising male contestants’ behaviour

Blaming new women coming into the house

Holding other female contestants to impossible standards

Bullying and isolating other female contestants

But there seems to be a noticeable shift, as emotionally mature and boundaried queens are often praised by the fans. I can’t help but feel pride when I see women in the villa standing up for themselves and for one another.

I know what it feels like to stand up for yourself against a man, something as simple as asking for accountability can result in being called mad or ‘too much’.

As women we know standing up for yourself can sometimes lead to violence.

_{Racism and Misogynoir}

As a white person it’s my responsibility to actively unpack my own racist beliefs, attitudes and behaviours. Being born in Ireland in the 80’s, back then it was predominantly white. So it was a long time before I had Black and/or Brown people in my community. It took until my late 20’s to properly reflect on race or any racist beliefs I might hold.

Racism exists at a systemic level, meaning that even with all the work and all the individual unpacking and self-reflection, the way the world functions, is still racist.

Racism is perpetuated through our screens; Love Island is not exempt.

Each season we’re “gifted” with the token Black person or if we’re lucky, the token Black couple. Even though love island has been running since 2015, in 2024 Mimi and Josh were the first Black couple to win love island UK.

Take for example this year we had Jasmine who is Dubai born and of mixed heritage. To me as a feminist I see an emotionally mature woman who knows what she wants.

Instead, the public is painting her as manipulative, aggressive, and too much for simply having boundaries and speaking her mind.

Men and other white female contestants are painted as emotionally mature and strong for showing the same qualities.

Black men on the show get less airtime, but if they do get air time, they are held to a different standard compared to white men behaving the same way.

They are villainised and cast as the “Black cheating man” stereotype. Yes, we should hold men accountable, but when our standards for Black men are stronger than white men, we’re perpetuating racism.

Year after year we have watched beautiful and intelligent Black women being treated as second class, an after thought and it seemed like the producers were putting men on the show who preferred white women. Meaning that we had women at home watching Black women representing them, being turned down time after time.

Just imagine what that does to your self esteem.

When the media you watch tells you you’re not enough and you don’t belong, eventually and you start believing it.

_Exclusion

_Disability

I was about 7 or 8 years old when I had my first crush. It was on this boy at a summer camp. He was funny, with dark hair and the most beautiful blue eyes. What I didn’t realise was that I wasn’t allowed to fancy a boy in a wheelchair. It was made obvious because of the attention I was giving him, and people started to bully me. I’d love to say that I said “fuck off” but I didn’t, it scared me and I stopped talking to him.

When I think about the lack of disability representation on love island I think of him.

I think about the messaging I received and the messaging the show is giving us by not having disability represented on the show.

This season we had Sam who is hard of hearing, and yes that’s a step in the right direction. But we have such a long way to go.

_LGBTQIA+

Why is there no LGBTQIA+ love island?

We are totally missing out. In my opinion anything queer is always better, way more entertainment, drama and deeper conversations. I’ve watched the ultimatum, but I’ve also watched queer ultimatum and let me tell you, worlds apart!

Way more entertaining.

There’s something special about seeing queer love represented, it makes me feel like (even just for a second) we’re possibly not on a pile of burning ball of shite heading to our impending doom.

_{Final thoughts}

I just want to end on this note; as problematic as love island might be I still watch it. Because my life is relatively boring and let’s face it, I love the drama. My daughter once told me that sometimes it’s good to watch problematic media. It creates a visual medium we can use to discuss these topics.
